MEET the Educator | Speaker | Inclusive Education Facilitator
Educator-Led.
Community-Centered.
Action-Focused.

Hi, I’m Melicia Hewitt (MEd). I became an educator because I believe young people deserve to see themselves in the curriculum and to understand the full complexity of the histories that shape our country.
I work directly with students and school communities to create spaces for thoughtful, age-appropriate conversations about identity, stereotypes, bias, and belonging. Through the Beyond Series, I help schools move from performative observances to sustained critical thinking and meaningful action.
My approach centers on student voice, lived experience, and historical depth. I bring a calm, grounded presence into classrooms, supporting educators and young people in navigating complex topics with care, curiosity, and respect.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions?
Common questions from educators, administrators, and school boards about bringing the Beyond Series to your school community.
What is the Beyond Series?
The Beyond Series is a set of grade-specific educational programs designed to help schools integrate Black Canadian history, challenge stereotypes, build student voice, and foster inclusive school communities. Each program is curriculum-aligned and tailored to age-appropriate learning outcomes.
What grade levels do you work with?
I work with students from Grade 1 through Grade 12. Each session is designed specifically for the developmental stage and curriculum expectations of the grade level, ensuring content is accessible, engaging, and meaningful.
How long is each session?
Each session is 60 minutes. For half-day and full-day visits, sessions are scheduled with breaks to allow for a smooth transition between classes.
Can we book just one program, or do we need to book the full series?
You can book individual programs based on your school’s needs and priorities. Many schools start with Beyond February and expand from there. I’m happy to help you choose the best fit during our planning conversation.
Is this appropriate for all students, or just specific groups?
The Beyond Series is designed for all students. The programming fosters critical thinking, empathy, historical literacy, and community responsibility, skills that benefit every learner regardless of background.
How does this align with curriculum expectations?
All programs connect to Language, Social Studies, Civics, Equity & Inclusion initiatives, and Social-Emotional Learning curriculum expectations. I provide curriculum connections in advance so teachers can integrate the learning into their units.
Do you provide resources for teachers to continue the learning?
Yes. After each visit, educators receive follow-up resources, reflection prompts, discussion guides, and classroom-ready activities to extend the learning beyond the session.
What makes your approach different from other speakers or assemblies?
My work is student-centred, curriculum-grounded, and age-appropriate. I’m not delivering a motivational speech. I’m facilitating deep, interactive learning experiences that encourage critical thinking, dialogue, and responsibility. Sessions are designed for lasting impact, not just awareness.
How do you handle sensitive topics with younger students?
I use developmentally appropriate language, stories, and activities tailored to each grade level. Younger students engage through storytelling, role-play, and reflection, while older students explore more complex concepts through discussion, analysis, and action planning. Every session prioritizes emotional safety and respect.
Can you work with multiple classes in one day?
Yes. I offer half-day (3 sessions) and full-day (5 sessions) options, allowing you to reach multiple classes or grade levels in a single visit. Sessions are scheduled with breaks to ensure quality engagement.
Do you work with staff as well or just students?
Yes. Programming can include: Student-focused sessions, professional learning workshops for staff, and facilitated conversations for leadership teams.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
Yes. Virtual options are available for those preferring remote programming.
What does the school need to provide?
A classroom or assembly space, projector access if available, and staff supervision during sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
1) Cancellations made more than 14 days before the scheduled visit may be rescheduled at no additional cost, subject to availability.
2) Cancellations within 14 days of the visit may incur a 50% cancellation fee to cover preparation and scheduling time.
3) Cancellations within 48 hours of the scheduled session may be charged the full session fee.
